Carry-On Weight Limits by Airline: The Complete List

Carry-On Weight Limits by Airline: The Complete List

Most US airlines do not weigh your carry-on. The ones that do cap it between 7 and 15 kg, and a heavy case eats your allowance before you pack a single shirt. Our 20-inch hard shell runs about 7.3 lb (3.3 kg) empty. On Emirates Economy, where the cap is 7 kg, you get 3.7 kg of actual packing. On airlines with no weight limit, the bag itself is never the problem.

Who weighs, who does not

Airline Cabin weight limit Weighs?
American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Alaska, Southwest No published limit No
Frontier 35 lb (15.9 kg) Sometimes
Air Canada 10 kg (22 lb) Yes
Lufthansa 8 kg (17.6 lb) Yes
Emirates (Economy) 7 kg (15.4 lb) Yes
easyJet 15 kg (33 lb) Yes
Qantas 7 kg (15.4 lb) Yes

Why empty weight matters

People compare suitcases on size, wheels and shell material. Few compare weight, and that is the number that decides whether you board or pay. A cheap hard-shell from a discount store can weigh 10 lb empty. On Emirates, that difference is your entire packing allowance gone before you open the lid.

The fix: weigh the bag empty, then packed. A bathroom scale works. Stand on it holding the bag, subtract your body weight, compare against the airline's limit. Do this at home, not at the gate.

When your bag is too heavy

Gate agents do not negotiate. Over the cap and your carry-on gets gate-checked. Lufthansa charges EUR 60-110. easyJet charges GBP 60 at the gate. The workaround: move dense items into your personal item. Chargers, shoes, books and a toiletry bag can shift two kilograms from the overhead bag to the under-seat bag, and the personal item rarely gets weighed.

Connecting flights: the trap

If your itinerary mixes airlines, the operating carrier sets the rule for each leg. Fly Delta to Frankfurt, connect on Lufthansa, and the 8 kg cap applies to the second flight even though Delta never weighed you. Pack to the stricter limit.

Which bag wins on weight-restricted airlines?

A 20-inch hard shell in polycarbonate is the safest bet. It sits at the light end of carry-on cases (7-8 lb empty), fits the strictest sizers at 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and leaves the most packing weight under a 7 kg cap. Frequently asked questions

Do US airlines weigh carry-on bags?

No. American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Alaska and Southwest publish no cabin weight limit. The exception is Frontier, which caps carry-ons at 35 lb and checks them at the gate.

What is the carry-on weight limit for international flights?

It varies by airline. Emirates caps at 7 kg in Economy, Qantas at 7 kg, Lufthansa at 8 kg, Air Canada at 10 kg, and British Airways at 23 kg. US carriers flying internationally still publish no weight limit, but a partner airline operating a connecting leg may weigh the bag.

The bottom line

If you fly US carriers, weight is rarely the issue. If you fly international, it can be the only issue. A polycarbonate 20-inch hard shell at 7-8 lb empty leaves room for 10-15 lb of clothes under the strictest caps. Weigh the bag packed at home, shift dense items to your personal item, and check the rules of every carrier on your itinerary.
